Our Community

The Laura Jamieson community is made up of a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds and interests. We have university students, young families, and seniors in our building and we strive to provide a safe space for all.

We are a family-oriented community with children of all ages. Our members are used to seeing the kids connect, play, and grow throughout the building (it's not always super quiet right after school!). We welcome 2SLGBTQI+ members and their children, and have members of different faiths and cultural backgrounds. We are also pet-friendly and have number of cats and dogs who live with us.

While we're a diverse community, we all contribute to the running of the Laura Jamieson Housing Cooperative to ensure our building is well-maintained, our cooperative is fiscally sustainable, and our community is able to provides a safe place for people to live. Member contributions may look like being on the Board of Directors or a member of a committee, such as Membership, Social, Information Technology, Finance, Grounds, or Maintenance. Other members take care of our grounds, look after recycling, or manage our keys. Members contribute using a variety of skills and abilities or take the opportunity to learn new ones through participation. These include meeting facilitation, mediating conflict, project management, anti-racism/anti-oppressive community building, handy-person skills, general administration, horticulture/grounds-keeping, chairing meetings, taking minutes, managing finances, tech/IT, communications skills, and many others! By members actively supporting the management of this community, we are able to offer places to live at more affordable rates than comparable commercial properties in the area.
